5 Coolest Cop Cars that Actually Exist
There have been endless amounts of renderings of cool cop cars, but most of the time they’re just that, a fantasy. Most cities around the world have “normal” cars that have been converted into cop cars and the coolest cop car renderings have been left to videogames like Need for Speed.
That said, some law enforcement agencies see the value of having a high performance vehicle in their fleet for specific purposes. When these cars get dressed up in law enforcement liveries, they end up looking ridiculously col. Here are what we think are the 5 coolest cop cars that are actually on the road (or gravel) today:
1. Ford SVT Raptor – United States Border Patrol
Although not a “cop car” the U.S. Border Patrol Raptor still helps enforce the law, and it’s absolutely awesome that the Border Patrol has added at least one Raptor to their fleet.
“Ur-Turn”, who appears to be a Border Patrol agent, said it best in his review on The Truth About Cars:
Our mildly modified Chevrolet Tahoe and Ford Super Duty vehicles can do almost all the things the Ford SVT Raptor is capable of doing. The difference is the ease (and speed) with which the Raptor does them. Where a Tahoe scrabbles up a steep slope, struggling to find purchase in loose rock, the Raptor simply ascends. Where an F350 churns through soft sand, fighting to keep its massive bulk afloat, the Raptor seems to glide over the surface. Our other trucks can be made to work in this environment, but the Raptor is to the manor born.
Not with the Raptor. I’ve yet to see a single one sidelined for damage caused by routine overuse. That’s not to say we haven’t “deadlined” a few; if you want to find a product’s limits, give it to a Border Patrol Agent. The Patrol has determined that the Raptor will not float across a running arroyo during monsoon season. Also, if you have too much fun playing with the included inclinometer display, it will roll sideways down a mountain. Yet to my knowledge, not even our wildest/dumbest agents have managed to bend the frame on one.
Having personally driven a Raptor in the desert, I can attest to it’s durability and capabilities off road. It probably isn’t half bad on actual pursuits either.
2. Lexus IS-F – Humberside Police in Northern England
The only super sedan on our list comes from Japan, and it packs a 416hp 5.0L V8 which helps it chase down some of the quickest cars in the UK. According to http://www.topcriminaljusticedegrees.org, Sergeant Mike Peck stated that the IS-F is used primarily as a deterrent, but that it could also help catch drug dealers who use performance cars to escape, and apparently it’s also been used to seize criminal assets.
3. BMW M3 – Dutch Police Department
The Dutch police have been known to utilize the mighty M3 to pull people over and quite frankly, the notion sounds pretty terrifying. Nothing says “you’re screwed” like an M3 in your rear view mirror with it’s police lights on; at that point it just makes sense to salute the officer and pull over. In fact, the Netherlands “awards” some of the highest traffic fines in Europe to it’s unlucky violators, which explains how they’re able to have a few M3’s in their fleet.
4. Lamborghini Huracan LP 610-4 Polizia – Italian State Police
It makes me so happy that there’s a Lamborghini in the police car in Italy. In 2004 and 2008 a total of two Gallardos were donated to the Italian State Police Department where one has reportedly clocked 110,000 kilometers on the clock cruising up and down the motorways. Their slogan is to “sustain security on Italian roads by continuing accident and crime prevention”. The new Huracan above will eventually continue where the Gallardos left off, and we think it will keep the peace relatively easily.
5. The Entire Dubai Police Department
In a country where a majority of the Nationals can afford high end sports cars, it only makes sense to have a fleet of high performance cop cars, right? Yup, what you’re seeing above is an authentic picture, not a screenshot from Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit. In fact, this entire list could have been comprised of epic cars in the Dubai Police Department’s lineup, but instead I wanted to dedicate the #5 slot to their entire fleet. As of today, here are the “special” cars in their lineup:
- Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4
- Ferrari FF
- Chevrolet Camaro SS
- Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG
- Bentley Continental GT
- Aston Martin One-77 (pulling people over with class)
- Ford Mustang GT
- BMW M6 Grand Coupe
- Brabus G63 AMG (did not want a “normal” G-Wagen)
- W Motors Lykan HyperSport (supporting local business)
- Bugatti Veyron (this is just too appropriate)
- Audi R8
- Nissan GT-R
- Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG
- McLaren MP4-12C
- BMW i8
Witty commentary aside, it’s almost hilarious to read the variety in the list and it’s absolutely bonkers once you realize these are real cop cars in Dubai. That said, if you are unfortunate enough to piss off one of these cars on the road, good luck.
